The ability to regenerate or regrow that bone then makes patients candidates for the treatment they really want, which is the replacement of teeth.

Dr. Steven Van Scoyoc, respected periodontist in Southern Pines, NC, recently attended an educational seminar hosted by the Southern Academy of Periodontology in Atlanta, GA. The two-day course covered the topic of bone grafting, including horizontal and vertical ridge augmentation and was led by Dr. Istvan Urban from Hungary.
Bone grafting, or ridge augmentation, is a procedure performed to replace the loss of jaw bone due to missing teeth, periodontal disease or trauma to the mouth. When bone loss occurs, the structure of the jaw is weakened, making existing teeth loose or the replacement of lost teeth with dental implants impossible. The seminar covered horizontal and vertical augmentation, which is frequently the greatest challenge of bone grafting. Attendees learned several objectives, including:
- Understand the biology of the fusion of the bone graft
- Understand oral anatomy
- Surgical principles of ridge augmentation
- Surgical principles of reconstruction of soft tissue after bone grafting
“Bone grafting is a surgical process where we use the available bone to help stimulate the growth of new bone and we can rebuild and recreate bone that has been gone for months to years,” says Dr. Van Scoyoc. “The ability to regenerate or regrow that bone then makes patients candidates for the treatment they really want, which is the replacement of teeth.”
The bone grafting process involves taking a small sample of bone and converting it into a granule material. This material is then placed over the location where it is missing and allowed to heal. The graft will fuse to existing bone and create a stable foundation for dental implants to be placed successfully. Once implants have been placed, they stimulate the jaw bone to encourage continued growth so that bone recession is not an issue in the future.
