Immigration agency officials with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services announced on Tuesday in a teleconference that there will be a suspension in premium processing for H-1B visas.
The suspension would only apply to H-1B applications from for-profit companies, which have an annual limit of 85,000 visas, according to Davis & Associates.
It is still not certain when the suspension will take effect, but it is expected to be in the first week of April after the annual lottery for H-1B visas. The winners from the lottery will be eligible to work in 2019 for the fiscal year, but those chosen must go through additional evaluation before they are allowed to work in the U.S. This is when the delay of premium processing will occur.
It is normal for immigration officials to suspend premium processing for a short time to deal with the large influx of applications, but last year’s six month delay was the longest one employers had seen yet. At this time, it is unknown how long this year’s suspension will last after the lottery.
“Our immigration attorneys are knowledgeable and can answer any questions about H-1B visas and the process of getting approved if you are chosen in the annual lottery. We want to help you,” said Garry Davis, owner and lead attorney at Davis & Associates.
