Batteries from GNB Industrial Power, a division of Exide Technologies, a leading global provider of stored electrical energy solutions, were selected for the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system at Allianz Tower, a 50-floor, 209 meter skyscraper in Milan. GNB was awarded the contract by Riello UPS, one of the world’s leading UPS producers.

Allianz Tower reaches 249 m with its broadcast antenna. It is the second-tallest building in Italy, the tallest in roof height and has the highest usable floor. The building attracts great attention for its slender design and the distinctive, diagonal struts at the base. It was designed by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki and Italian architect Andrea Maffei.

Riello UPS provided UPS and batteries for 40 floors at the tower and, in addition, six UPS for critical loads situated in the tower basement. According to Riello UPS, GNB is one of the company’s main battery suppliers due to its reliable technology and world-class support and expertise.

“GNB was awarded the contract thanks to its track record working on similar projects, its commitment to excellence, and the proven reliability and performance of its batteries,” said Giuliano Marra, Riello UPS Product Manager.

GNB provided batteries to Riello UPS with a design life beyond 12 years. This is the highest grade of battery, with the “longest life and highest reliability” by EUROBAT classifications. The solution comprises 1680 blocks to cover UPS energy needs, plus 640 blocks for auxiliary systems, all from the GNB Marathon range. The blocks are positioned on racks with automatic switches.

The energy storage system had to fit within tight space constraints, which tightened further as the project evolved. Using its world-class expertise, GNB designed a solution that matched these constraints and met the customer’s full requirements.
