Hospitals are citing two reasons for BYOD’s attractive approach to employee mobility: 1) employees are already bringing in their own devices to work and implementing a BYOD policy would be convenient and natural, and 2) hospitals will enjoy cost-savings by not having to invest in purchasing additional hardware for employees, all while improving worker productivity.
While convenient and cost-effective, IT professionals are worried about the impact BYOD will have on the security of sensitive patient data. The average cost of data breach reported by the survey was $141 in 2017. When lost/stolen devices were involved, that cost rises to more than $148. In the healthcare segment, the average cost of data breach is a staggering $380 per record, 2.7 times the overall average for all segments.
Mobile device security is especially prudent in the healthcare industry. Healthcare data is rich, and often contains more information than just health history; data like date of birth, insurance policy number, billing and account numbers, social security numbers, credit card numbers and other sensitive information are present in healthcare records. According to Reuters, medical information now commands 10 times the black-market value of a complete credit card number. Healthcare data is the data cyber-criminals want to sell on the black market.
