Spring Break Hands-On Activities at the Kalamazoo Valley Museum Feature Classic Fairy Tales with a Twist
(PRWEB) March 24, 2018 -- The Kalamazoo Valley Museum offers daily programs during Spring Break, April 2-6. Classic Fairy Tales with a Twist is the theme of five days of arts and crafts from 1 to 4 p.m. Art inspired by two different books each day will be offered free of charge. Books come alive with two free performances by the Magic Carpet Theatre on Wednesday, April 4, at 1 and 3 p.m.
April 2: Do Pigs Fly? Pigs can fly with the help of a sneeze and karate moves in No Lie, Pigs (and Their Houses) Can Fly by Jessica Gunderson and The Three Ninja Pigs by Corey Rosen Schwartz. Assemble a pinwheel, a 3D wolf mask, and a dojo. Decorate a potholder, a bacon bookmark, three little pigs stick puppets, a ninja headband and mask, and a ninja bookmark and placemat.
April 3: Kindhearted Wolves? In the unique adventure of Baabwaa and Wooliam, two sheep become friends with a wolf. The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka tells the wolf's side of the story. Decorate a journal, drawstring bag, apron, sugar cup, and wanted poster. Put together a wolf bookmark, sheep puppets, an origami bird, and a tissue holder.
April 4: Unlikely Friends? Unusual friendships take place in The Knight and the Dragon by Tomie dePaola and A Splendid Friend Indeed by Suzanne Bloom. Create a knight and dragon mask. Decorate a shield, a sword, puppets, and bookmarks. Sculpt a bear from clay.
April 5: Happily Ever After? Characters from The Frog Prince Continued by Jon Scieszka and The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch have a hard time finding their “happily ever after” in these two twisted versions of classic tales. Assemble a collage castle, cork board, paper bag costume, dragon airplane, and prince mask. Decorate a picture frame, witch’s hat, frog prince mask, crown, and bandana.
April 6: Animals Play Ball? Franklin and his team learn to use their strengths in Franklin Plays the Game by Paulette Bourgeois. It’s the herbivores versus the carnivores in Dino-Baseball by Lisa Wheeler. Make a team bookmark, Franklin puppet, soccer ball, and team shirt. Scratch a dinosaur, color a baseball, visor, team souvenir, bat, and mitt, and create a collage dinosaur.
Two special free performances will take place on Wednesday, April 4, by the Magic Carpet Theatre. This interactive theater performance involves the audience in role-playing and creating sound effects. “Children listen to our stories with their hearts, howl from their guts, and participate creatively with their hands and minds,” according to Catherine Zardus. The Sneetches by Dr. Seuss, Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, and The Fisherman and His Wife by the Brothers Grimm are a few of the stories that will be included in these shows at 1 and 3 p.m. Seating is limited, and tickets are available the front desk.
