ATLANTA (PRWEB) March 31, 2018 -- The IT industry added 4,700 jobs in February according to preliminary numbers released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Economic Situation Report on Friday, March 9, 2018.
“The IT industry experienced minor growth in February, gaining only 4,700 jobs compared to the 18,900 jobs added in January,” said Jay Rollins, owner of ITJobsWeb.com, a leading IT jobs website. “February’s lower numbers are largely due to the loss of jobs in management and technical consulting.”
The IT industry now employs 4,887,600 persons. This includes employment information from the data processing, hosting and related services subsector, the computer and electronic product manufacturing subsector, the computer systems design and related services industry group, and the management and technical consulting services industry group.
The computer systems design industry group grew the fastest in February, adding 3,100 jobs. Over the past 12 months, the industry group has added 45,400 jobs and now sits at 2,071,500 employed persons.
The data processing and hosting subsector added 2,300 jobs, up from the 1,800 jobs added in January. Over the last 12 months, the subsector has added 10,800 jobs and now employs 323,700 persons.
Computer and electronic manufacturing added 1,100 jobs last month, down slightly from the 1,300 jobs added in January. Over the last 12 months, the subsector has added 21,400 jobs and now employs 1,058,200 persons.
Management and technical consulting was the only subsector to lose jobs in February, jumping from 11,900 jobs added in January to 1,800 jobs lost last month. Over the last 12 months, the subsector has added 56,400 jobs.
Across all industries, total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 313,000 jobs in February. Unemployment remained at 4.1 percent for the fifth consecutive month, and the number of unemployed persons was unchanged at 6.7 million. Employment increased in construction, retail trade, professional and business services, manufacturing, financial activities, and mining.
