This a great project for us, we are a local Arizona company and we are very comfortable with projects of this size and complexity, it’s what we do, and we are very good at what we do.

Southwest Energy Systems, a NETA accredited Electrical Testing and Engineering firm, located in Phoenix, AZ was recently awarded the contract to complete the electrical testing and pre-commissioning of the new Arizona Public Service Ocotillo Power Plant in Tempe, AZ.

The new Ocotillo Power Plant will utilize five 102 MW high efficiency natural gas turbines, making it one of the largest and cleanest power producers in the West. Southwest Energy Systems is very pleased to be selected for this critical project. Ed Kavanagh, Business Development Manager for SES stated, “This a great project for us, we are a local Arizona company and we are very comfortable with projects of this size and complexity, it’s what we do, and we are very good at what we do.”

The modernization will replace the two steam-generated turbines with five natural gas-driven generators. The bulk oil tanks at the Tempe site, north of University Drive between Rural and McClintock roads, will be removed. The four 178-foot tall stacks will be replaced with five stacks at about half the height. The interconnecting web of high voltage power lines will remain.

Currently, the site produces 330MW of power. Two 1970s-era 55-megawatt generators will remain and five new 102MW units will be added to the plant. The plant will generate 620MW of power when the renovation is completed in 2018.

About Southwest Energy Systems

Southwest Energy Systems, LLC, was founded in 2006 when a group of experienced professionals came together with the goal of providing third-party electrical testing and engineering studies that would meet their clients’ needs for high quality and personalized service. We realized that a more client-focused company which was not beholden to any manufacturer would be in the best position to meet this goal.
