California Native Plant Society to Host Virtual Native Garden Tours
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (PRWEB) April 10, 2018 -- The California Native Plant Society (CNPS) will be hosting two garden tours this week on Facebook Live. Viewers will be able to take a “virtual” walk through private native plant gardens, one in Berkeley, the other in Sacramento. CNPS staff and garden hosts will be on camera and online to offer tips and answers questions throughout the events.
“This is a great way to see what's possible with native plant gardening,” said Liv O’Keeffe, communications director for the California Native Plant Society. “Not only are these landscapes beautiful and better for the environment, they also help restore our connection to the natural world."

Sacramento Tour | Thursday April 12 at 10:15 a.m.
The first tour features the garden of Marla Mcclaren, a .7 acre habitat garden that uses woodland plants, streams, and rock outcrops. Mcclaren started her native plant collection five years ago to support native pollinators and birds. The garden was so water efficient that she was able to shut off irrigation to most of her yard after a year.
Berkeley Tour | Friday, April 13 at 11 a.m.
On Friday, CNPS will join native plant gardening experts Kathy Kramer of the Bringing Back the Natives Garden Tour and Pete Veilleux of East Bay Wilds to broadcast live from a 15,000 square foot garden in the Berkeley hills. Author and landscape designer Judith Larner Lowry designed this stunning garden, which sits under a canopy of 40 redwood and Sequoia trees and includes multiple species of ferns and wildflowers.
“Changing your landscape from a thirsty lawn to a low-water use garden is a great way to save water,” said Jolene Bertetto of East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD), who will be live from the Berkeley tour to share water-saving tips. “Native plants are a great alternative to lawns, offering year-round beauty and requiring little water during California’s dry summer months.”

Both gardens featured in this week’s virtual events will viewable in-person at upcoming tours. Mcclaren’s Sacramento Garden is part of the CNPS Sacramento Valley Chapter’s Gardens Gone Native Tour this Saturday, April 14. The Berkeley garden will be showcased as part of the Bringing Back the Natives East Bay garden tour on May 5 and 6. CNPS and its partners are offering dozens of native plant garden tours, plant sales, and field trips this spring throughout California.
