The Law Offices of James Scott Farrin has made great strides to minimize their environmental footprint. Paralegal Laura Kelly Lancaster and attorney Jacob Goad, co-lead the firm’s “Green Team.”
Lancaster said, “We stopped using Styrofoam cups in all offices in 2015, and by our estimates we had saved the planet from 27,000 Styrofoam cups within two years. We also try to be aware of paper usage, which can be difficult for a law firm. Even so, we have transitioned some of our more paper-focused firm processes to electronic communications.”
Other eco-friendly efforts the firm said they have made include:
• Planting 20 trees in downtown Durham in honor of the law firm’s 20th anniversary
• Adopting an easier, more efficient, and more user-friendly recycling initiative
• Replacing K cups with coffee that does not use the cups
• Composting
• Tracking the amount of paper printed and efforts to decrease it quarterly
• Adopting a one-mile stretch of Walnut Creek Trail for quarterly clean up
• Promoting environmental clean-up outings for employees and their families
• Promoting alternative transportation among employees
• Using a car fleet with an EcoBoost option
• Shredding documents through a service that recycles
The firm is looking forward to another successful event.
“Earth Day comes at a beautiful time of year,” Goad said. “Flowers are blooming, people are moving around more, and it is hard not to be outdoors. We remember just how much we appreciate the natural world. The firm cares about making its small contribution to the important work being done by local environmental non-profits who are doing all they can to preserve the beauty of the Earth for future generations, and we hope people will come out and learn about their important work and enjoy themselves too.”
The event is open to all and RSVP is encouraged, but not required. For event and weather updates, visit the event page on James Scott Farrin Facebook. Or email greenteam(at)farrin.com. #EarthDayatATC #ATCDurham
