CARY, N.C. (PRWEB) April 17, 2018
Dude Solutions, the leading software-as-a-service (SaaS) provider of operations management solutions today, released the results of the second annual Education Operations Health Index, a collection of unique data and survey results reporting on the state of education facilities and operations nationwide. Sentiment remained largely consistent year to year and represents both positive and negative trends in varying areas across operational responsibilities.
The Education Operations Health Index combines two decades of Dude Solutions (formerly SchoolDude) operations statistics and a 25-question survey reflecting the sentiments of operations leaders across the education landscape. Dude Solutions evaluates and scores the responses with a positive or negative sentiment and calculates an overall composite Education Operations Health Index score on a scale of 1-100, with 100 being the most optimistic outlook and indicator of success.
The 2018 composite operations index score increased slightly to 57.2, citing community facility use and energy expenses at the positive end of the sentiment. Deferred maintenance and proactive approaches like predicative maintenance and Internet of Things were ruled negative, with the sentiment suggesting disconnect between the priorities of budgetary decision makers and operations professionals.
“It’s a privilege to provide this unique data-based view so that every education leader, from superintendents to business officers to CIOs, has a benchmark to not only pinpoint their department’s strengths and weaknesses, but make informed and actionable decisions,” said Nick Mirisis, vice president of marketing for Dude Solutions. “The Education Operations Health Index will be refreshed and released each spring, in hopes that it will continue inspiring the necessary changes to keep our institutions healthy and our students safe.”
Highlights of the 2018 Education Operations Health Index include:
Predictive Maintenance and the Internet of Things
Predictive maintenance (PdM) strategies are on the rise and utilize the Internet of Things functionality to predict asset maintenance. Despite the cost and time savings achieved from this approach, over 50 percent of institutions are unfamiliar with PdM and 85.4 percent are not taking advantage of IoT capabilities (though 20 percent plan to in the near future).
The average life of facilities is roughly 40 years, yet funding capital upgrades and improvements is often overlooked at K-12 and higher education institutions. The recommended percentage of funding set aside for deferred maintenance and capital projects is three percent annually, and only 19 percent are allocating a portion this size. Nearly 50 percent allocated less than three percent to none.
Community Use of Facilities
Only 16.6 percent report high deterioration, with 83.4 percent reporting either some or little to no deterioration, indicating that institutions are seeing less wear and tear on facilities from after-hours use.
As a result of improved tracking and lower usage costs, 70 percent of respondents did not see an increase in energy spend last year.
Getting connected is easier, and 55 percent of respondents say they have more devices now than last year. But with more assets to keep track of, plus data security concerns, IT teams feel they face an uphill battle without enough resources.
