“Growing Season”: a vibrant memoir of a family’s survival in the wake of bipolar disorder. “Growing Season” is the creation of published author Lori White, a housewife, mother of three, and substitute elementary school teacher from small-town Iowa who has always written as a hobby.

Following her husband’s depressive episode, White shares: “For two straight weeks, we had him back. For the past few years, we had gone through the motions. When Donnie was home on the weekends, we did nothing. We no longer had couple friends; that ended when Donnie went on the road. I felt that I had lost a lot of my friends when Donnie was manic. Life became very routine. Donnie worked during the week. I kept things up at home and made sure I had the laundry caught up by the weekend. Donnie would come home on Friday nights. I would do his laundry all weekend, and we would sit and do nothing. Life was boring, and when he was home, I seemed to be just as lonely as I was when he was gone. He seemed…blah. He existed, he worked, he visited on the weekends, he left, and it started over again. I can’t say that I thought he was depressed over the last three years, just blah. There were no interests, no excitement, nothing. The only depression I knew about was what I saw him go through. I did not know enough about it to realize that over the last three years, the depression was still there.”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Lori White’s new book is at once solemn and soaring, bringing the reader through the dizzying ups and devastating downs of a life utterly transformed by a mood disorder, and the resulting chaos it brings about in the family of the suffering.

Elegantly plainspoken and thoroughly human, Lori White’s memoir of her battle and her personal “growth pains” will resonate with those similarly struggling to survive, or supporting those who do.
