News: UC Davis Program Offers Transportation for Pregnant Moms who Need Fetal Intervention
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (PRWEB) May 01, 2018 -- UC DAVIS PROGRAM OFFERS TRANSPORTATION FOR PREGNANT MOMS WHO NEED FETAL INTERVENTION
UC Davis Children’s Hospital will now offer free transportation to pregnant moms in need of fetal interventions, as part of a new UC Davis Fetal Patient Transportation Pilot Program.
Thanks to a Children’s Miracle Network at UC Davis grant, the 12-month pilot program will utilize Lyft to provide free round-trip transportation for pregnant patients in Northern California to UC Davis Children’s Hospital. This program was designed for pregnant women whose babies have been diagnosed with suspected or known congenital anomalies and are in need of treatment, whether it is fetal echocardiography, fetal surgery, genetic counseling or maternal-fetal medicine. Pregnant patients who require this specialized care are eligible to receive a round-trip ride, along with a guest, within the Lyft service area.
“For some patients, the burden of having to travel for specialized prenatal care often means the care is sacrificed. Our pilot program will greatly reduce transportation barriers for this target population,” said fetal surgeon Shinjiro Hirose, who also is the director of the UC Davis Fetal Care and Treatment Center. “The goal of this pilot is to provide timely access to specialized prenatal care for this high-risk patient population, thereby giving their children the greatest opportunities for quality of life.”
The UC Davis Fetal Care and Treatment Center is home to a highly specialized comprehensive and multidisciplinary fetal diagnosis and therapy center serving inland Northern California. It offers expertise across areas of high-risk obstetrical care, fetal cardiology, fetal diagnosis, fetal treatment and fetal surgery to provide both surgical and nonsurgical therapies.
UC Davis Children's Hospital is the Sacramento region's only nationally ranked, comprehensive hospital providing care for infants, children, adolescents and young adults with primary, subspecialty and critical care. It includes the Central Valley's only pediatric emergency department and level I pediatric trauma center, which offers the highest level of care for its critically ill patients, as well as a level I children's surgery center. The 129-bed children's hospital includes the state-of-the-art 49-bed neonatal and 24-bed pediatric intensive care and pediatric cardiac intensive care units.
