Vander Wolk. Jefferson, a native of Massachusetts, attended Phillips Exeter Academy and Babson College. During a Korean War-era tour as an Air Force instructor pilot in West Texas, he formed a construction company to build houses, rental apartments, and commercial properties. At the age of thirty-five, while living on the East Coast, he become semiretired and began pursuing his interests in related management and problem-solving methodologies. During his college years, he became familiar with the Lincoln Electric Company and its highly successful management system. A visit with that company’s president, James F. Lincoln, eventually led to an enduring interest in Lincoln’s approach. This long-standing interest, combined with what he viewed as a mistaken belief that Lincoln’s approach could never work in the service industries, finally prompted him to establish two “management laboratories” to qualify that contention in 2004. The results of these two laboratories became the inspiration for this book.
