Five $1,000 Scholarships to be Granted by EarQ and the NFLPA’s Professional Athletes Foundation
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (PRWEB) May 03, 2018 -- EarQ and the NFL Players Association’s Professional Athletes Foundation launched its third annual scholarship program for student athletes with hearing loss. Through the program, five students will receive $1,000 to go toward their higher education.
EarQ and the NFLPA have been tackling issues surrounding hearing loss since the partnership began in 2011. Its efforts have included spearheading a research study on hearing loss in former pro players, providing hearing screenings for players and their family members, and connecting them with the hearing care and technology they need.
The scholarship program was born in 2015 in an effort to inspire a new generation of athletes who have overcome challenges surrounding their hearing loss. The program is open to high school juniors through college sophomores who have played at least one year of high school varsity sports and are attending—or have plans to attend—a college or university.
Todd Honas became the first recipient of the scholarship when he was a high school senior. He went on to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln where he is a wide-receiver.
“Even though I battled against an array of problems, I didn’t let those problems define me,” said Todd. “Whether we like it or not, we will all face adversity, but it can be overcome with courage and relentless pursuit.”
Previously, the scholarship has been granted to two athletes per year; however, after seeing interest increase in 2017, the program has expanded to offer five scholarships. Applicants should submit a written essay along with the application packet that describes their personal experience with hearing loss and/or hearing devices, and how they would utilize the scholarship funds to help them achieve their life goals.
