Show Mom Some Love this Mother’s Day with the Gift of a Newly Planted Tree
HUNTINGDON VALLEY, Pa. (PRWEB) May 07, 2018 -- Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate Moms, and the gift of a newly planted tree will add value and beauty to any property. Giroud Tree and Lawn recommends following these tips when buying and planting a tree.
1. Decide What Mom’s Landscape Needs: There are many reasons to plant new trees or shrubs. Giroud Tree and Lawn recommends working with an ISA Certified Arborist who will determine the property’s needs and help pick the best location for a new tree. For example, many homeowners want to:
• Replace a tree that has died or outgrown its current location and requires tree removal.
• Build a privacy screen or sound barrier
• Provide shade for a patio, porch or other area
• Add color with a tree that flowers or changes color with the seasons
• Create a focal point with a plant that has unusual branch formation, interesting bark or other characteristics
2. Select the best plants for the location: Once a location is determined, and ISA Certified Arborist can recommend the best plant for that special spot. It is extremely important to consider:
• Space: How much room does the tree have to grow in height and spread? The tree's growth habit should match the space available.
• Location: Is area sunny, shady or open to the wind and other weather?
• Soil conditions: What type of soil will the tree grow in: loose, wet, rocky or compact?
• Proximity to Other Structures: Will the tree be near a patio, walkway, other plantings or a window?
“I recommend digging a hole that is twice the size of the root ball and the root ball should be just a few inches above the soil once it’s in the ground,” says Robert Poley, Giroud ISA Certfied Arborist. “However, I urge homeowners to work with a reputable tree company when planting a new tree. An arborist understands the growth habits of each species of trees and plant the tree in a location that’s best for when it reaches full maturity. They’ll take into account overhead wires, proximity to the house and how the roots will grow near driveways and sidewalks.”
3. Give it a strong start: When planting a new tree, it is important to give it good care from the start.
• Water: Keep the soil moist, but not wet, through the first year.
• Fertilize: Have a certified arborist inject fertilizer treatment that's specially formulated to help young trees get established.
• Pruning: To develop good branch structure, it's important to have the young tree pruned every one to three years.
• Check its progress: Have your and ISA Certified Arborist monitor the tree annually to ensure it maintains good health.
Tree planting transforms a landscape today and only gets more beautiful with age.
