With the desire to share his stories and photography to the world, W. R. Stanton spent the early 1970s hitchhiking, taking buses and riding atop trains and trucks through Mexico, Central America and the Andes, seeking to experience more of the native culture he had fallen in love with during an earlier trip to Mexico. Almost 20 years later, as a professional photographer and filmmaker, he returned to Latin America to photograph what made his original experiences there so life transforming: the people.

Stanton explains that his book provides a window into a part of the world that is not well understood. He also hopes that through his stories and photographs, readers will have a better understanding of Mexico, Central America and the Andes.

An excerpt from the book:
“In Andes folklore a pishtaco is a blonde white man who creeps into villages at night and abducts, cuts the throats of, and dismembers unsuspecting villagers. He then extracts the fat from the corpses and uses it to grease his machines. The legend derives from the time of the conquistadors, and the suspicion of outsiders, especially Caucasians, persists to the present day.”
