Originally named Kusamil; or Land of the Swallows, on May 3rd, the city will celebrated 500 years since the arrival of Spanish explorer Juan Grijalva. Festivities included reenactments of the sacred Mayan journey as well as the Spanish arrival on the coast of the island that took place in 1518 on Holy Cross Day. In addition to reenactments, the city will commemorate this milestone with a traditional vaqueria which consists of three events: a mass, a bullfight, and ending with traditional folk dancing. Other events include live concerts, art exhibits, a celebration of Mexican cinema, seminars with authors and journalists, and sporting events.
