Set during the Industrial Revolution, Sarah Schmidt grows up in a time of discovery and change. Surviving through the death of her first husband, her path crosses with that of an army colonel. However, their love is tested by the looming war. Sarah then finds the tin box her husband has tucked away and unveils a secret that eventually leads her to a coal-mining town in Middle America, to accomplish endeavors she never imagined.

“I, my family and ancestors, lived through a different version of some of the book,” Hammond shares. Moreover, “The book is heavy with examples of how human beings can promote good relationships of many kinds.”

Through the book, Hammond reminds readers how they can deal with life successfully, just as the characters did – by remaining true to themselves and creating happiness and joy for others.
