Honor Soldiers Past and Present at Civil War Remembrance in Greenfield Village Memorial Day Weekend
DEARBORN, Mich. (PRWEB) May 09, 2018 -- This Memorial Day Weekend, guests are invited to become a part of living history as civilian and military living historians, active campsites and period music enliven Greenfield Village for Civil War Remembrance, May 26-28. The most authentic display of Civil War re-enactors in the country will immerse visitors in life during wartime. Civil War Remembrance programming is extended to 9 pm on Saturday, May 26. On Memorial Day, Monday May 28, The Henry Ford will host a commemoration ceremony on the Village Green to honor all veterans and active duty men and women at 12 pm. At 3 p.m. Greenfield Village will participate in a National Moment of Silence at 3 pm signaled by the Armington & Sims shop whistle.
New this year, Cheyney McKnight, historian, living history specialist and founder of Not Your Momma’s History, will present a unique perspective on the life and culture of both enslaved and free people of color in the Antebellum South during the mid-19th century. On Monday, curators Debra Reid and Jim Johnson will share stories from the collections of The Henry Ford on the role of the United States Colored Troops during the war. Also new this year is a presentation from associate curator Ryan Jelso on inventor Martha Coston who perfected a flare that helped the Union Navy and saved countless lives.
Throughout the weekend, living history experts will showcase the resourcefulness of soldiers and take part in cavalry, artillery firing and tactical demonstrations at Walnut Grove. Inside the Village Pavilion guests can hear from special guest historians regarding Michigan’s role in the war, the truth behind the use of quilts and the Underground Railroad, and get a closer look at the clothing from that time through a special display.
The music of the era comes to life throughout the weekend with performances by the Dodworth Saxhorn Band, the Picks & Sticks Stringband, the Dodworth Duo, the North Star Gospel Chorale and a special Saturday evening performance celebrating early American banjo music by Tin Cremona and Friends at Town Hall. Guests can hear how music influenced the culture of the time and President Abraham Lincoln’s playlist through special presentations by music and material culture historians John and Elaine Masciale.
