Ready to Launch: Young Adults Overcoming Their Addictions and Taking the Next Step
WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. (PRWEB) May 17, 2018 -- This weekend in Burbank, CA, Andy D. and Timothy B. celebrated their graduation from Woodbury University, both receiving their Bachelor’s degrees after overcoming struggles with substance abuse. For both it is the end of a chapter and the beginning of a new phase of health and recovery. Prior to being alumni of Woodbury University, Andy and Timmy were alumni of Sober College®, a drug and alcohol treatment program for young adults ages 18-26 that combines accredited college classes and dual-diagnosis drug and alcohol treatment. Andy recalls the lack of direction he had coming to Sober College®, “When I admitted to Sober College I was a High School dropout. I wanted to get sober and take the next step in my life but it felt so out of reach.” With the support and guidance of Sober College’s academic and clinical staff, Andy was able to complete high school. As he healed, his desire for higher education was reignited. “When I looked around Sober College I saw staff who were happy, accomplished, and successful, and I wanted to be a part of that. I knew that their happiness was the result of their going to school and pursuing a career they were passionate about. Sober College helped me to rediscover my passion for life and education.”
Sober College’s unique partnership with Woodbury University was what helped Timothy finally complete the college degree he always wanted. Timothy explains, “When I came to Sober College I had attended several community colleges and a four year university but was not able to finish due to my drinking. I kept getting derailed.” He continues, “While at Sober College I was able to learn the tools I needed to be successful. I took the Woodbury University courses offered on-site at Sober College and used their partnership with Woodbury to transfer previous credits and complete my degree.” Already pursuing his Master’s degree at Woodbury, Timothy sees the sky is the limit. “I learned so much during my time at Sober College. I am a different person today. I know that I am smart and capable of anything thanks to the launch pad that Sober College provided.”
Thanks to their unique partnership with Woodbury University, Sober College® is the only drug and alcohol treatment center that offers on-site, rolling admission college courses that clients can take while in treatment. Clients can earn up to 15 college credits in six months. The courses are designed not only to help clients regain their passion for life and find direction but to enhance the recovery process. “Schoolwork and critical thinking help students improve their executive functioning skills and heal the parts of the brain that are damaged by drug and alcohol use,” explains Dr. Holly Daniels, Clinical Systems Director at Sober College. “The in-class experience allows clients to participate successfully in a real college classes while also getting the support they need to overcome their issues and succeed. And at the same time we’re preparing them for life after treatment.” Sober College® alumni have gone on to graduate from Woodbury as well as many other universities and colleges across the United States, taking the skills and credits they earned at Sober College® with them.
“I do not know where I would be today without Sober College,” says Andy,” All I can say is Thank you Sober College. Thank you for my life.”
