University of San Francisco & Veterans Campaign Launch Online Masters Program to Prepare Veterans for a “Second Service” in Civic Leadership
SAN FRANCISCO (PRWEB) May 17, 2018 -- The University of San Francisco (USF) has partnered with Veterans Campaign to launch a new degree program for service members, veterans, military family members, and others interested in honing their leadership skills for continued public service. The Master of Arts in Public Leadership is a 32-credit hybrid online and seminar degree program designed to prepare students for success in running for public office, legislative affairs, campaign management, advocacy and/or civic leadership. Applications are open now.
Veterans Campaign is the only non-partisan, non-ideological organization whose mission is to encourage, mentor and prepare veterans for a "second service" in civic leadership, powered by the belief that the military community is a valuable, yet largely untapped, source of civic and political leaders.
“Veterans learn what it takes to be a leader in the military, and they often enter civilian life with a drive to continue leading others,” said Seth Lynn, founder and executive director of Veterans Campaign and administrative director of the Masters of Arts in Public Leadership at USF. “Going from being a leader at home or overseas to being a public leader takes a new kind of training. The Masters of Arts in Public Leadership gives veterans, service members, and others who want to keep serving the tools and skills needed to take the next steps in their career.”
This is an unparalleled opportunity for future public leaders to learn directly from expert practitioners in a nonpartisan environment. The program's faculty includes a diverse mix of traditional scholars and experienced leaders.
“Coming from a background of both military and civic service myself, it is inspiring to see USF and Veterans Campaign come together to foster the success of well-educated, motivated and brave future public leaders,” said the program’s Senior Lecturer, Hon. Patrick J. Murphy – the first Iraq veteran elected to Congress and former acting Secretary of the Army. "The values and leadership powering our nation’s military are exactly what public service needs, now more than ever.”
Students will learn how to succeed not only as elected officials, but also in a variety of professional settings outside of politics and in their individual commitments to public service.
“At the heart of USF’s mission is educating leaders who will fashion a more just, humane and sustainable world,” said Paul J. Fitzgerald, S.J., president of the university. “We are proud to work with veterans in preparing them for a new public service mission where they can continue contributing to positive change in our country and the world.”
The program includes eight online courses and five intensive in-person workshops in San Francisco and the National Capital Region, as well as a capstone course where students put what they have learned into practice. Students can complete the degree while working full time, and qualified veterans can receive full tuition reimbursement through a combination of G.I. Bill and Yellow Ribbon Program funding. There will be additional financial aid for those not eligible for the G.I. Bill.
The priority deadline for Fall 2018 enrollment is July 1, and more information can be found at: https://www.veteranscampaign.org/usfca-home
