How to Have a Memorable Memorial Day Party: 4 Tips from EP Henry
WOODBURY, N.J. (PRWEB) May 24, 2018 -- Celebrate the holiday with feeling.
Memorial Day is a time to reflect and gather with friends and family. It’s also the unofficial start of the summer season. Here are a few ways to fire up the season of fun while still respecting the original reason for the holiday.
Decorate
Memorial Day was also known as Decoration Day, a day when families would place memorial flowers and flags on the graves of fallen military members. The Old Red, White and Blue is the theme for any Memorial Day party. Flags and banners are welcome, but plates, tablecloths, and napkins can don the patriotic colors too. Place a few helium balloons around the pool deck. Use colored chalk on the pavers. Stars and stripes can accent a table or be used as place settings.
Moment of Silence
With all the festivities, it’s easy to lose sight of the purpose of the day, which is to honor those who gave their lives in service of others. A unified activity for guests that allows for quiet reflection, a moment of silence brings more meaning to the gathering.
Historical Dishes
Foods that hold historic or family significance are fitting for the Memorial Day holiday. Bringing out great grandma’s rhubarb pie or long-forgotten potato salad recipe will serve delight and reverie to family members and spark conversations of days gone by and loved ones missed.
Games
Soldiers in WWII often passed the time with dice and a deck of cards. While a traditional Memorial Day party on the patio would include modern lawn games like cornhole or horseshoes, adding a slice of life from a soldier’s life can add a special element to the day. Card games WWII soldiers played, like Contract Bridge, Pinochle and Auction, are a bit hard to learn in a day. Poker and dice games can work for the adults, and 1940s era games like pick-up sticks, marbles and jacks will be great for the kids.
Sometimes all it takes to make a moment memorable is a small detail connecting us back to the people we loved or past heroes we admire. Adding a few elements filled with that connection will make any Memorial Day party one to be remembered.
