Wisdom That Can Change Your Life - Susan Sly Interviews Living With Monks Author, Jesse Itzler
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (PRWEB) May 29, 2018 -- Podcast sensation, author, speaker, and entrepreneur, Susan Sly, interviews Living With Monks author, Jesse Itzler on his latest book, his tips for a successful marriage (he happens to be married to Spanx founder, Sara Blakely), how he handles overwhelm, and plans for his upcoming 50th birthday - think living with one expert each week for 50 weeks.
Jesse Itzler is no stranger to immersion learning. In his book, Living With a Navy Seal, Itzler invites 'Seal' a.k.a. David Goggins, to come and live in his NYC apartment with his family. Goggins wakes Itzler up for midnight runs, forces him to do 1,000 push-ups, and ultimately teaches him that most of us are not living into our potential.
In Living With Monks, Itzler is back in fine form. Feeling burdened by his day-to-day schedule, and wrangling 4 kids, Itzler decides to go and live with monks. These monks, however, are not your typical robe wearing, chanting monks. They are Christian, dog-raising, monks who teach Itzler many lessons including the value of starting one thing and seeing it through until completion, the true importance of time, and how breakdowns are often necessary in order for a breakthrough to occur.
When asked about overwhelm, Itzler, says that it is important for him to get stuff out of his head. He keeps two journals - one for everyday reminders and one for ideas. He says that as long as he can get things on paper, he feels better. He said that living with the monks also taught him to reflect on what is truly important. In other words, if something doesn't move the needle for him, he is not going to do it.
In this show, Sly and Itzler banter about some of their own life adventures including Sly doing a full Ironman with a fractured pelvis, and narrowly avoiding getting kidnapped in Guatemala. Sly asks Itzler about the secret to his ultimate success - he was a rapper, the founder of Marquis Jets, and the catalyst behind the rise of Zico coconut water. He responds that the key is to be different. Whether it is being one of the original white rappers, Jesse Jaymes, in the 80's, or creatively figuring out a way to start a luxury jet company without money, Jesse Itzler embraces different.
Ultimately, Itzler feels that if you truly want to change your life then build a life resume - a chronicle of what you have accomplished. Itzler says that he discerns the quality of a person by what they have achieved as opposed to where they work or what college they went to. He says that to live an amazing life, it comes down to this - don't believe in stories, believe in bodies of works.
