The first official day of summer solstice (June 19) is right around the corner. The warmer weather and later sunsets have been ongoing. It's about to be summer. And for many, that means vacation.
Gift Card Granny, the largest website and apps for buying gift cards at a discount, surveyed nearly 3,000 of their US based members to learn of their upcoming vacation plans and preferences. A high level overview of the Summer Vacation & Spending Trends for 2018 goes as follows.
2018 SUMMER VACATION PLANS
60% say they will vacation, 20% say they will not. The remaining 20% are not sure yet only a few weeks away from the start of summer. Of the “no” respondents, financial reasons (40%) and personal reasons (14%) were the most common vacation blockers.
44% people surveyed are planning one vacation only. Two (27.5%), Three (7%), Four (1%), 5 or more (2%) and a chunk of 18% of people remain undecided on the exact number of getaways this summer.
July (21%) is the most preferred vacation month, with fellow summer months of June (15.5%) and August (14%) coming in close behind. January (2.4%), November (2.6%), and March (3%) finished at the bottom for favorite R and R months.
2018 vs. 2017 SUMMER VACATIONERS
79% of last year's summer vacation goers plan to do at least one trip this year. Only 6% who vacationed last year say they do not plan to this summer. 14% of last year vacationers are undecided at this point.
Compared to 2017, 24% said they would vacation this summer despite not vacationing last summer.
VACATION RESEARCH & BOOKING TRENDS
Gift Card Granny asked its members how they research, plan, and or book their vacations. The results reinforce the role the Internet plays among vacation planners with 71% turning to search engines. Deal websites (41%), information travel sites (40%), and travel aggregator sites (39%) followed behind in a near three-way tie. In person bookings through travel agencies are pretty much a thing of the past with only 11% preferring this route.
POPULAR VACATION DESTINATIONS FOR AMERICANS
The majority of survey respondents prefer to remain in the United States (56%) while 18% enjoy trips to other countries outside of the US with Caribbean (20.4%), Europe (18.7%), Mexico (12%), and all-inclusive resorts (21%) in any country being the most popular.
A beach vacation (49.8%) more than doubled vacation preference over a cruise (23%) or traveling to theme parks (21.6%). Florida (25.7%) finished as the most popular vacation destination ahead of California (20%).
SUMMER VACATION TRANSPORTATION
55% of survey respondents say they will travel by automobile this summer. Another 38% say they will take to the friendly skies. Other (4.6%), boat (1.6%) and train (1.2%) rounded out the top five popular modes of summer transportation.
AVERAGE LENGTH OF SUMMER VACATIONS
Four to seven days is the most popular vacation length as reported by a majority of 60% respondents. Ten days (14.5%), one to three days (14%), two weeks (6%), and more than two weeks (4.6%) coming back as lesser vacation durations.
AVERAGE VACATION COST PER PERSON
27.5% report they typically spend $301 - $600 per person on vacation. $601 - $1,000 followed closely behind with for average cost for 26.6% of respondents. A minority of 13% of survey takers said they spend more than $1,500 per person.
