New Novel Details How One Boy Unwittingly Becomes a Warrior in Kamehameha’s Army
TEXAS CITY, Texas (PRWEB) June 05, 2018 -- Inspired by Hawaiian history, myths and culture that D.R. Pollock learned about while living in Hawaii, Pollock’s new historical novel, “Koa Kai: The Story of Zachary Bower and the Conquest of the Hawaiian Islands” (published by Archway Publishing), brings them all together with a mix of adventure, romance, sadness and joy. In the novel, a boy from New England is unwittingly thrust into the army of Kamehameha and the wars to unite the Hawaiian Islands during the late eighteenth century. The novel is available for purchase at: https://www.amazon.com/Koa-Kai-Zachary-Conquest-Hawaiian/dp/1480859362.
After his mother dies, Zachary Bower goes to his aunt’s home in New London, Connecticut. While there, he joins the crew of the barque Setauket for a voyage around Cape Horn to Spanish California. Upon reaching California, he is separated from his ship pressed into service as a crew member on the Schooner Fair American bound for Hawaii. When Fair American is captured by the Hawaiians, Zachary becomes a captive soldier in Kamehameha’s campaigns. After several years in Hawaii, he is retrieved from Hawaii and returns to New London at the end of the story.
“The story shows that the concept of ‘aloha,’ allowed love and kindness to exist even though the Hawaiians were immersed in war and violence,” Pollock explains. “With the discontent and violence featured on the news every day, an understanding of and practice of ‘aloha’ could go a long way to mending wounds.”
