California Art Club Offers Artist-Led Tours During 107th Annual Gold Medal Exhibition at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County
LOS ANGELES (PRWEB) June 15, 2018 -- The California Art Club is presenting a series of tours led by nationally prominent and up-and-coming fine artists during its 107th Annual Gold Medal Exhibition, on view at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County through July 1.
One of the country’s most anticipated displays of contemporary-traditional art, the Gold Medal Exhibition spotlights more than 300 paintings and sculpture, ranging from pristine landscapes to evocative figurative works and sculpture. In presenting this year’s event at NHMLA, the exhibition is returning to the museum that hosted in 1914 the fifth installment of this storied exhibition. Between 1914 and 1944, the then-called Los Angeles County Museum of History, Science and Art would showcase the Club’s hallmark exhibition 26 times – more than any other venue.
In offering these tours, which explore a variety of representational genres and subjects – including paleontological art – the Club continues the legacy of its founders, who were dedicated to fostering a dialogue about classical art forms between artists and art enthusiasts.
The featured artists have diverse backgrounds and accomplishments and include William Stout, the fantasy artist and illustrator, whose work inspired Michael Crichton to write Jurassic Park; Eric Merrell, best known for his nocturne paintings of the California desert; and William Wray, well known for his animation work for "The Ren & Stimpy Show” and the “Monroe” series for Mad magazine.
The schedule for the tours, which are free with museum admission, is as follows:
Saturday, June 16:
1:30 p.m. Rick Humphrey and Jeff Yeomans on “The Great Outdoors and Urban Landscapes”
2:30 p.m. Eric Merrell and Andrew Dickson on “Landscapes, Nightscapes, and Desert Scenes”
Saturday, June 23:
1:30 p.m. Laurie Hendricks on “Impressions of the Past”
2:30 p.m. Rohini Sen on “Art from Ashes and Working with Charcoal”
Sunday, July 1:
1:30 p.m. William Stout on “Bringing Back the Dinosaurs”
2:30 p.m. William Wray on “Urban Settings and Redefining Landscape Painting”
The tours on July 1, the closing day for the exhibition, will coincide with a “Paint/Sculpt-Out” by Club artists on the museum grounds, which will allow art enthusiasts of all ages to watch artists at work creating new artwork.

The mission of the Club is to promote traditional fine arts in the fields of painting, drawing and sculpture; produce and promote art exhibitions that foster greater understanding of traditional art heritage and California history; and furnish educational opportunities in the fine arts. Members include nationally renowned artists, art students, art scholars and patrons, and leading collectors and members of the business community in order to interject different perspectives into the ongoing dialogue about traditional fine arts.
About the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County
The Natural History Family of Museums includes NHMLA, the La Brea Tar Pits and Museum (Hancock Park/Mid-Wilshire), and the William S. Hart Museum (Newhall, California). The Family of Museums serves more than 1.2 million visitors annually, and it is a national leader in research, exhibitions, and education. NHMLA was the first dedicated museum building in Los Angeles, opening its doors in 1913, and has since amassed one of the world’s most extensive and valuable collections of natural and cultural history—more than 35 million objects. NHMLA is the only natural history museum in the world today that incorporates on- and offsite urban nature exploration, local wildlife inventories, a slate of community science programs, and active research into a museum paradigm that once focused on history but now also addresses the present and future, through a focus on living nature.
