Everything You Thought About Selfies is Wrong
(PRWEB) June 25, 2018 -- It’s not just Kim Kardashian or Kylie Jenner flashing their faces anymore, selfies are everywhere. Each day, Facebook users upload 350 million photos, Instagram users upload 95 million photos, and Snapchat users upload 3 billion snaps. Though not all of those are selfies, the rise of self-portraits in social media and visual culture and the attention they receive (more “likes” than most other posts) highlights a surprising societal trend.
In "SELFIES: Why We Love (and Hate) Them" by Katrin Tiidenbereg (Society Now series; Emerald Publishing), the foremost international researcher on selfies offers a rich analysis of selfie culture, exploring the social, cultural, and technological aspects of how selfies gain their meaning, how they make us feel, and why they have the power they do.
Some topics focused on in the book:
• How, why and when selfies make us feel “good” or “bad”
• Has the selfie peaked? Are we post selfie?
• Social functions of networked visuals or what does the selfie do?
• Our social identity and how that is tied to selfies
• Selfies as tools for self-examination
• And many more…
Tiidenberg shows how selfies mean different things to different people, depending on tone, and context, but ultimately highlight a historical reconfiguration of a visual self-representation that has occurred throughout time.
