Mediaplanet and Actor RJ Mitte Come Together to Empower the Disabled Community
NEW YORK (PRWEB) June 27, 2018 -- Mediaplanet today announces the launch of this June’s edition of “Disability Empowerment.” This campaign will advocate for the disabled community’s well-being, as well as celebrate our differences in a positive light and the various contributions people with both physical and developmental disabilities make to our society. It also serves to educate people with physical disabilities, amputees and their caregivers on the resources, such as incredible organizations and associations, that are there to support them.
There are 56.7 million people are living with a disability in the United Sates — making up nearly 20 percent of the population. The quality of a physically disabled person’s life is significantly compromised when it comes to their mobility and access to daily needs. Additionally, just in the United States alone, over 2 million people suffer from limb loss. Whether as a result of an injury from serving in the military, a birth defect or a previous health complication, living life with the loss of one or more limbs can be extremely difficult. Access to jobs, representation in government and the ability to live a life free from judgment and discrimination are all issues that affect the disabled community daily.
The print component of “Disability Empowerment” is distributed within today’s edition of USA Today in Chicago, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Houston, Atlanta and Central Florida, with a circulation of approximately 250,000 copies and an estimated readership of 750,000. The digital component is distributed nationally, through a vast social media strategy and across a network of top news sites and partner outlets. Disability activist and actor RJ Mitte graces the cover of the print publication. Through an exclusive interview on the interior, Mitte explores the joys and challenges of portraying a character with cerebral palsy on the highly popular television show, “Breaking Bad,” as he himself was diagnosed with the disorder at age three. He also talks about navigating living with a disability. "I had AFOs [ankle-foot orthosis braces] and casts on both my feet, so to me those were actually very normal in my daily life.” It was so normal to the young Mitte, he didn’t realize any difference between himself and his peers until he first went to school. “Kids saw my braces and saw my casts and were like, 'what's wrong with you?' I didn't understand it in the beginning,” he shares. "I was like, 'this is normal.’ I thought everyone had braces or wore casts or had some form of physical or occupational therapy because I grew up with it.”
In addition to his many creative pursuits, the award-winning actor works to spread awareness for many causes, but especially the disability community, serving as a celebrity ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy. “Everyone needs to remember we all have challenges,” Mitte urges. "Can't is a decision. You choose to say 'I can’t’ do something. That's not actually accurate. That's your body arguing with your mind. That's a lie. If you push through it you can."
This campaign was made possible with the support of the Wounded Warrior Project, Free Wheelchair Mission, Eye to Eye, Heather Abbott Foundation, National Ability Center, Amputee Coalition, A Leg To Stand On, American Orthotists and Prosthetists Association, Freedom Service Dogs and Mobility Outreach International.
