Northeast Technical Institute’s Manufacturing Technician Program Boosts Skill-Attainment for Entry Level Workers
SCARBOROUGH, Maine (PRWEB) August 07, 2018 -- Leveraging a highly successful public/private partnership, Northeast Technical Institute’s Manufacturing Technician program provides specialized training that prepares students for a long-term career in manufacturing and helps fill an urgent need to enhance the employer’s competitiveness.
The Manufacturing Technician program uses an innovative outcome-based training approach to meet the educational requirements for introducing adult learners to manufacturing careers. Along with boosting skill-attainment for entry level workers, the program also helps employers promote the “coolness” of today’s manufacturing workplace. As the nationwide appetite for trade knowledge continues to grow, Northeast Technical Institute works closely with local employers to fill their employment needs and is recognized as a statewide success.
“With today’s low unemployment, businesses are looking for qualified employees,” said Senator Amy Volk. “Northeast Technical Institute’s program helps fill that need. It’s no longer about finding jobs for people. The paradigm has shifted to finding people for jobs.”
Utilizing a high-velocity training model, the 11-week Manufacturing Technician program provides the job seeker with multiple options for employment in higher-wage positions. Employers can take advantage of a consistent output of work-ready talent entering the workforce regularly and with skills above entry-level.
“Middle skill jobs normally take up to 6 months of high cost, one-on-one training by the employer,” said Peter Weymouth, Northeast Technical Institute’s Training and Development Coordinator and Manufacturing Program Lead. “Maine’s competitive advantage in this global economy is enhanced when the workforce understands the culture of manufacturing.”
Northeast Technical Institute is a service provider for the Maine Department of Labor Competitive Skills Scholarship Program (CSSP), which is intended to provide individuals with access to education, training and support leading to skilled, well-compensated jobs with anticipated high employment demand, to improve the economic well-being of the participants in the program and to provide employers with a skilled labor force.
“In Lewiston, the strategy has been to combine the CSSP funds with the federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) funding in order to stretch training dollars and reach a larger population of eligible candidates,” said Patti Saarinen, WIOA Site Coordinator, WMCA Lewiston CareerCenter. “By combining resources, we are able to reach more people and provide them with the competencies employers are seeking.”
Dawn Self-Cooper, CareerCenter Manager at Maine Department of Labor, Bureau of Employment Services agrees: “This training is available to anyone eligible and seeking to enter employment in the manufacturing sector and can be funded through additional resources.”
Recently approved by the Council on Occupational Education, the national accrediting agency of higher education institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, the Manufacturing Technician program is offered at the Scarborough and Lewiston campuses. Northeast Technical Institute will offer the next Manufacturing Technician program beginning August 27 in Scarborough and in October 22 in Lewiston.
Founded in 1995, Northeast Technical Institute is the region’s leading provider of short-term, career focused training. With campuses in Scarborough, Bangor, and Lewiston, courses are offered in health care, information technology, commercial truck driving, HVAC/R, and manufacturing.
