New Book Celebrates Perseverance of the Only Black Catholic Parish in Nebraska
OMAHA, Ne. (PRWEB) July 18, 2018 -- “Black and Catholic in Omaha: A Case of Double Jeopardy: The First Fifty Years of St. Benedict the Moor Parish” (published by iUniverse) is a reconstruction by author Jack Angus of the first 50 years of the difficult journey from mission to mainstream Catholic parish for St. Benedict the Moor and its people. The parish just celebrated its 100th anniversary.
Angus shows how faith, insight and persistence of the generations of St. Benedict parishioners has enabled them to survive and to thrive for so long. He describes how those qualities took them through financial depression, war, flooding, riots and brought them to a new and greater sense of their own heritage. The book highlights Father Cassilly, the founding pastor; Father Killoren, the longest serving pastor; and various lay leaders over the years. Angus argues these people were instrumental in influencing the direction of the parish in its first 50 years.
Angus hopes that his book helps readers gain “an appreciation of how advantageous it is to be white in America, and conversely, how that fact seriously disadvantages people of color.”
