Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) has enlisted Commercial Equities Group (CEG) to manage the immediate sale and leasing of three vacant school buildings. Headquartered in Minneapolis and owned by Jeff Salzbrun, CEG is the first certified Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) commercial real estate brokerage in Minnesota. Salzbrun served in the Army Airborne before starting his career in commercial real estate.
With decades of experience, he has already begun meeting with developers and potential buyers. For well over 100 years, Tuttle, Gordon and Willard schools have served the community, and the District wants to find new owners that will continue that tradition.
“MPS wants to make sure whoever takes over these properties is adding value to the neighborhoods,” explains Salzbrun. “Empty buildings aren’t good for neighborhoods.”
“Finding a qualified developer or operator is key so that these buildings don’t continue to sit empty,” he adds. “Developers that put the time and money to turn these old buildings into something beautiful are out there. It’s our job to help make those deals happen.”
Some of the proposed uses for these buildings include housing, office space, community centers, maker spaces or mixed use. “It’s really fun to see all of the pieces come together and life brought back to buildings like these,” says Salzbrun. “Most importantly, it will be great to see how they continue to serve the community.”
