HONOLULU, March 3, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Omnitrak Travel Penetration Index decreased in January 2023 after December 2022 travel rose to the highest since 2019. January's Index closed at 69.4 (2015=100), dropping from 118.2 in December. Compared with the same month prior year, the January 2023 index dropped less – 6.6 points from 76.0 in January 2022.
"Holiday travel in December returned with a vengeance last year, so the historic post-holiday drop off is more than usual," said Chris Kam, Omnitrak President and COO. "We'll be watching to see if February and March travel indices increase as they did in 2022.
Compared seasonally, January's travel penetration is the second lowest for the month since 2015. (2021 was the lowest January.) It could forecast softening as talk of a recession is more frequent this year than last.
Talk of a recession appears to have had less impact on discretionary leisure travel. In contrast to the downturn in overall travel penetration, Omnitrak's Leisure Travel Index, which excludes business, incentive and convention travel, increased from 101.6 in December to 118.8 in January. "This is partly impacted by travelers choosing to delay holiday return travel into the new year as a work-around to high holiday costs of transportation." Kam offered.
Travel penetration indices come from Omnitrak Traveltrak America which surveys a nationwide sample of over 12,000 Americans per month, making it one of the largest travel tracking studies in the U.S.
