New A Forever Recovery Blog Post Highlights that Prescription Drug Abuse is Now the Leading Cause of Accidental Death
Battle Creek, MI (PRWEB) February 20, 2015 -- A Forever Recovery, an open-ended drug and alcohol treatment program that gets clients off to a great start and gives them a solid foundation in recovery they can believe in, has published a new blog post that highlights a chilling fact that will take many people by surprise: prescription drug abuse is now the nation’s leading cause of accidental death.
The startling fact, which is based on research conducted by the Clinton Foundation, refers to prescription drug abuse as a “rising epidemic” that kills more people each year than car accidents, and overdose-related fatalities associated with other addictive and dangerous drugs such as cocaine.
“The biggest and most dangerous myth out there that fuels this epidemic is that somehow prescription drugs are safer than illicit street drugs, because at some point they were created by scientists and prescribed by a doctor,” commented A Forever Recovery’s CEO Per Wickstrom. “This is especially problematic because many teens, including those in college, feel that it’s safer to experiment with prescription drugs than illicit street drugs. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Unfortunately, by the time many people realize this they have become addicted, and their life spirals out of control – until they end up in the hospital, in jail, or in some cases, the morgue.”
The prescription drug epidemic is also a topic that NFL All-Pro Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor knows all too well.
“My best friend’s son got hooked on pills and I saw him completely destroy himself,” said Taylor during a recent one-on-one conversation with Per Wickstrom that coincided with a stirring speech he delivered to A Forever Recovery’s patients. “I used to talk to him, talk to him, talk to him; and just like pills and crack and alcohol, at some point in time, you have to hope that they get it…pills, I think it’s so much harder than crack -- you have to go look for crack. These pills are everywhere. Doctors just hand them out. It’s amazing how society has changed.”
