Latest A Forever Recovery Blog Explains the Meaning of “Dope Sick”
Battle Creek, MI (PRWEB) November 06, 2014 -- In its latest blog post, A Forever Recovery, an open-ended drug and alcohol treatment program that gets clients off to a great start and gives them a solid foundation in recovery they can believe in, is explaining a term that is causing confusion among parents, family members and loved ones of individuals recovering from addiction: “dope sick.”
“The term dope sick essentially refers to the withdrawal symptoms associated with coming off drugs,” commented A Forever Recovery’s CEO Per Wickstrom. “However, while the term is becoming fairly common, there’s concern that it’s not accurately conveying the potential depth and severity of these symptoms, which encompass both physical and emotional issues that can last for a few days, a few weeks or even a few months.”
The new A Forever Recovery Blog post also highlights some specific symptoms associated with being dope sick, including:
• Tremors and shaking
• Muscle aches and spasms, including ‘restless’ muscles
• Hot and cold flashes
• Digestion disruptions, including loss of appetite or, conversely, a huge return of appetite
• An insatiable desire to eat
• Vomiting, diarrhea and, sometimes, constipation
• The sensation of bugs crawling on or under the skin, which can lead to self-harm from scratching or slapping at the sensations.
• Feeling hyper-aware of breathing, heartbeat or other feelings that largely pass unnoticed by those not undergoing withdrawal
• Severe dry mouth
• Insatiable, sudden thirst
• Intense headaches
• Sweating
• Uncontrollable yawning
• Problems with balance
• Mental agitation
• Anxiety, ranging from slight feelings of unease to paranoia
• Frustration at tasks the person may otherwise find simple
• Overwhelming feelings of depression, despondency, loneliness or worthlessness
Added Per Wickstrom: “Residential inpatient treatment remains among the best options for addicts when it comes to handling dope sickness, since they receive around-the-clock medical and therapeutic support, along with programs that can include cognitive behavioral therapy.”
