Citizen Science In The Peruvian Amazon Presentation On January 14 At 6:30 pm In The BioScience Health Center On The Iowa Central Community College Campus In Fort Dodge, IA
Fort Dodge, IA (PRWEB) January 08, 2015 -- The Citizen Science in the Peruvian Amazon is a free presentation that will be an eye opening experience for teachers, students and the general public. Everyone is invited to attend the presentation that will be held on the Iowa Central Community College campus in the BioScience Health Center auditorium at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, January 14th.
The presenter, Lawrence “DC” Randle, is a Biology and Wildlife Management Instructor at St. Francis High School in Saint Francis, Minnesota. He was selected, as one of six teachers internationally, to participate in the JASON V expedition to the Belize with Dr. Robert Ballard. DC Randle holds numerous board and teacher advisory positions with environmental and education organizations. In 2013, he was awarded the Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation District Teacher.
DC Randle will show how this program breaks down the classroom walls and gives students the learning experience of a lifetime. The Amazon Workshops receive rave reviews, keeping students active in the rainforest and immersed in a third world experience that for many has been life changing.
During the workshops, students discover birds, insects, frogs, monkeys and plants. They will be working side-by-side with scientists in one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on the plant.
The workshop is inquiry-based exploration including STEM education and a better understanding of the complexities of global environmental issues.
Students also experience a rare day of learning in a village along the banks of the Amazon River where they interact with indigenous people to see how they use the forest for medicine, food and shelter.
The Rainforest Canopy Walkway is where students ascend 115 feet over the rainforest on a quarter of mile of walkway. Here they will have unparalleled access to all levels of the rainforest, including the rainforest canopy via what is considered the world’s most extensive canopy walkways.
“The location of this workshop is set in the heart of an amazing global resource – the Amazon rainforest.” According to Lawrence “DC” Randle, Director of Education and Citizen Science for ACTS. “This forest is the greatest expanse of contiguous forest on the planet and it protects the Earth’s largest river. Our workshop offers an experience very few will have the opportunity to have.”
Other presentations in the area will also be held at the Fort Dodge Noon Rotary, Eagle Grove Rotary and for the students and staff at St. Edmonds High School.
