The 2nd Annual AustOberfest (Austin + Oktoberfest) to be Hosted in Texas’ Oldest Bier Garten on September 27th, 2014
Austin, Texas (PRWEB) July 29, 2014 -- On Saturday, September 27, Austin Saengerrunde will open the doors to the Saengerrunde Halle and Scholz Bier Garten (1607 San Jacinto Blvd) for the 2nd Annual AustOberfest to celebrate Central Texas German heritage with German beer, sausages, bowling and live music. All-inclusive tickets are $40 in advance, $50 at the door, $20 for Saengerrunde members, and are available at Brown Paper Tickets. Proceeds will benefit Foodways Texas.
Tickets to this authentic Oktoberfest celebration gives you access to unlimited German-style sausages, mustards and sides from some of the top Central Texas meat purveyors including La Barbecue, Micklethwait Craft Meats, Hoover’s Cooking, Louie Mueller Barbecue, Meyer's Elgin Smokehouse, School House Pub, Southside Market & Barbecue, Live Oak Barbecue, Kiolbassa, Freedmen’s, Smokey Denmark Smoked Meats, The Best Wurst, and more to be announced.
No bierfest would be complete without a ceremonial keg tapping and German beer tastings from award-winning German breweries Paulaner and Hacker Pschorr. There’ll be a total of nine beers to try including Hacker Pschorr’s Munich Dark, Oktoberfest (only available Aug - Oct), Weisse, Weisse Dark, and Paulaner’s Hefe Weizen, Munich Lager, Oktoberfest and Premium Pils.
AustOberfest will boast loads of fun and entertainment for all mann and frau to enjoy. In addition to bowling and a rooftop bier garten, live music ranging from polka to honky tonk to big band will be sure to keep the lederhosens and dirndls twirling. Those to grace this year’s stage include Austin’s only authentic Czech polka band, Czech Melody Masters, a nationally-acclaimed and locally loved honky tonk band, The Derailers, a band who claimed the hearts of many Austinites by playing a hospital concert for someone injured in the SXSW tragedy, Jared & The Mill, and lastly a 16 piece 40s-style swing band, Moonlight Express Big Band.
As early as 1850, Germans constituted more than 50 percent of the total Texas population, a proportion that remained constant through the remainder of the nineteenth century. Austin Saengerrunde hosts many events throughout the year to promote the preservation and heritage of their German ancestors, including AustOberfest.

As early in 1852, German settlers in the Austin area had formed a singing group. On February 8, 1879, they officially organized as a singing society bearing the name “Saengerrunde." It is the oldest ethnic organization in Austin. Scholz Garden, established in 1867 by a German immigrant named August Scholz, became a favorite meeting place for Saengerrunde members.The Scholz Garden property, owned by Lemp Brewery of St. Louis, included a hall and bowling alley. In 1904, the Saengerrunde Club signed a lease with Lemp Brewery for the use of the property. In 1908 the club purchased the property.The facility has continued to provide an atmosphere that allows our members to preserve and enjoy their German heritage.
