Haag-Streit UK donates slit lamp to Birmingham Vision Care for Homeless People Centre
Harlow, Essex (PRWEB UK) 6 August 2013 -- Haag-Streit UK (HS-UK), the leading manufacturer and distributor of gold-standard optometry and ophthalmic equipment, has boosted the clinical offering at Vision Care for Homeless People’s (VCHP) Birmingham centre with the donation of a new BM900 slit lamp, to replace older technology.
VCHP is a charity set up to provide free eye care services to homeless and other vulnerable people in an accessible and friendly environment. The charity’s aim is to preserve, protect and promote the ocular health of these people in the UK, who are unwilling or unable to access mainstream services available through the NHS.
Optometrists at the centre in Allcock Street, are delighted to be using the new slit lamp, along with a new Goldmann tonometer and stocks of Tonosafe disposable prisms, also donated by HS-UK.
Waqqas Ahmed, volunteer Optometrist commented, “Most of the clients who come in just need to have a new pair of glasses but the slit lamp is integral to even basic sight tests. This new model is great – far easier to use, with excellent optics, bright illumination, faster and more reliable. We are also looking for more serious eye diseases with the slit lamp, such as signs of diabetes or glaucoma. We were never able to carry out contact tonometry before so Haag Streit’s donation is a major enhancement to the service that we are offering.”
The BM900 slit lamp will be ideal for use in the Birmingham centre due to its excellent quality and high-precision Haag-Streit optics. Having sold more than 100,000 of these slit lamps around the world, the BM900 is the instrument of choice for many eye care professionals.

In addition to the items donated to the Birmingham clinic, HS-UK also donated a variety of other optical equipment including; Perkins Tonometers, Cross Cylinders and NV reading charts. The equipment was sent to the various VCHP clinics in both London and Brighton.
