New Memoir Shares African-American Couple’s Journey to become Middle-Class During the Civil Rights Movement
HAMPTON, Ga. (PRWEB) August 17, 2017 -- In “Back from the South: A Couple’s Transitions from Segregation to Integration” (published by Archway Publishing), author Teressa V. Staten, PhD, offers an autobiographical picture of how events of the segregated South defined her character and that of her late husband, John.
The memoir chronicles how she and John overcame blatant racism to achieve numerous accomplishments. It shares the couple’s personal struggles with depression and the unexpected suicide of their son. “Back from the South” explores the positive and negative consequences of being the first to integrate in many situations in a rapidly evolving culture resistant to change. Staten describes how their character, education, and sheer determination led them to leave their hometowns in the South, move to the north, and work through institutional odds to become middle-class Americans, often being the first blacks to work and live in all-white workplaces and communities.
Staten says, “It is my prayer and hopes that America will follow the laws of humanity and recognize as in the words of Mother Teresa, ‘If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.’ And as Julian Bond stated, ‘The humanity of all Americans is diminished when any group is denied rights granted to others.’”
“An incredibly moving firsthand account of life, love, achievement, challenge, and loss,” says Nanette Lee Reynolds, EdD., the former director of Michigan’s department of Civil Rights. “This Black family’s journey is chronicled over fifty years – from the desegregated south through evolving civil rights progress, for which they were well positioned to benefit and contribute back,”
