Bark House at Highland Craftsmen Brings First Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Platinum Product to Greenbuild KB Home ProjeKt™ Show Home
SPRUCE PINE, NC (PRWEB) October 05, 2016 -- The Bark House at Highland Craftsmen is proud to be featured in the Greenbuild KB Home ProjeKt™ at the Los Angeles Convention Center on October 5-6, 2016. Among Highland Craftsmen’s products incorporated into the home is the Bark House poplar shingle, the first product to ever earn Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Platinum—the highest level awarded within the rigorous product standard.
A centerpiece of the Greenbuild Expo floor, the KB Home ProjeKt aims to showcase leading ideas for architectural solutions that can be implemented today and also explore future possibilities for high-performing, resilient homes. Inclusion of Bark House wall coverings within the home illustrate the role biophilic design and natural elements can play in a more sustainable built environment.
“Our products become a perfect fit within the show home, evoking timelessness and beauty while reestablishing a human connection to the natural world. People’s relationship with the environment is able to be reignited—even while entrenched in the built environment,” said Chris McCurry, co-founder of Bark House. “We are equally proud of the high standard to which our products are made, and that they represent the highest regard to sustainable material, manufacturing and the community as denoted by the Cradle to Cradle® methodology.”
The exterior of the show home features the Cradle to Cradle Certified Platinum designated poplar bark shingles, evoking a natural and organic texture to the structure. It is the first product to meet Platinum requirements across all five Cradle to Cradle certification categories, including: material health, material reutilization, renewable energy and carbon management, water stewardship, and social fairness.
The interior will prominently display poplar and birch wall coverings around the fireplace and inside the bedroom, one of which has been awarded Cradle to Cradle Certified Silver. Made from reclaimed tree bark from carefully-managed forests local to the company, the entire Bark House wall covering product line is an important part of the spirit of integration with nature that the home intends to create.
It is not just because of its visual appeal that Bark House products have earned a place in the show home. Bark House shingles represent a high point in product design for its consideration of critical environmental and social factors, as validated by its Cradle to Cradle certifications and B Corp Best for the World status.
“We are very proud for the Bark House poplar shingle, the first Platinum product, to be included along with the many Cradle to Cradle certified products within this year’s demonstration home at Greenbuild,” said Lewis Perkins, President of the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute. “Bark House has fulfilled the highest aspiration of the standard, an accomplishment that truly demonstrates the depth of their commitment and that our aspirations, while challenging, are achievable. We will continue to work diligently to help and encourage all of industry to do the same.”
With artisan craftsmanship, Bark House transforms what was once a waste material into an elegant, handcrafted wall covering for exteriors and interiors. The product is maintenance-free, sustainably manufactured, and is fully recyclable at the end of its use.
Bark House is located in the mountains of North Carolina, creating a deep connection to the land and relationship with the community and the environment. As a locally-produced product, Bark House wall coverings benefit Appalachia with jobs, bringing 70% of its income back into the local community.
Highland Craftsmen products with Cradle to Cradle certification are eligible as a path to compliance in Options 1 and 2 of the Materials & Resources credit of LEED v4. Bark House Poplar wall coverings (shingles and panels) come in standard-grade singles or in a thicker, premium grade that obtain course, deep furrows and a more pronounced shadow line. Sanded interior-grade wall coverings are also available.
