The reputation management industry has seen rapid growth over the past decade, and according to Brandon Hopkins, there is no reason to expect a plateau or a decline. Hopkins recently declared that 2014 would be the year in which the reputation management industry experiences its greatest boom, as the prevalence and importance of a solid Internet presence has become even greater in recent years.

“As people’s lives become more irrevocably tied to the Internet, there will be a greater demand for the services of reputation management companies,” said Hopkins. “There is a generation out there whose entire lives have been documented on the Internet, and unfortunately, every mistake and misstep has been permanently recorded someplace that is easily found.”

It is not just the amount of information that is being recorded on the Internet that will contribute to Hopkins’ predicted spike. It is also due to the fact that more and more companies expect web-based materials as part of an employee application. In addition to traditional background checks, many companies are often digging deeper into social media to find out about prospective and current employees.

“Companies are being much more thorough in their hiring and firing procedures due to the significant amount of information that is available,” said Hopkins. “Companies are now letting go employees due to something they may have said on Twitter that reflected poorly on the company, even if it was done outside of work. That tweet could potentially follow that person around for the rest of their career, or they may be labeled a malcontent as a result. There are endless possibilities.”

Hopkins also noted that there are more and more methods available for people to express themselves to broad audiences. This type of exposure may often lead to unintended consequences that somehow harm an individual’s reputation.

“Social media is already so popular,” said Hopkins. “There are new social media opportunities cropping up daily and people are able to have countless interactions where everything they say may be permanently documented. Statements are often misconstrued and misinterpreted, which may lead to an inaccurate online reputation that needs to be rectified. Growth is going to continue to skyrocket as more and more of these mediums become available.”
