Oklahoma City, OK (PRWEB) November 29, 2016 -- Family members who cannot be present are often fearful for the safety of their elderly loved ones. Injuries resulting from falls or household accidents can be quite serious. For those who think a family member might need in-home care services, Fearnow lists the following three tips, including questions to ask about their loved one(s):
No. 1: Check their lifestyle and household maintenance needs. Make sure if the phone rings, the loved one can hear the ring and can get up and answer it in a safe and timely manner. The interior and exterior of the home should also be assessed. “Do they clean the kitchen, living room, bedrooms, and bathrooms? Do they mow the lawn, shovel (if needed), garden, etc.? Are they doing their own laundry?” said Fearnow. “Do they shop for their own groceries. Do they stay on top of their finances?”
No. 2: Consider the loved one’s social and emotional well-being. This includes determining if they are attending social and family activities they enjoy, such as a book club, bridge club, religious services, reunions, birthdays, etc. “Do they talk and socialize with their friends, neighbors, or relatives regularly?” asked Fearnow.
No. 3: Assess their personal care needs. Family members need to ask themselves a series of questions to determine the personal care needs of their loved one. When the loved one wakes up, can they get out of bed easily? Can they walk to the restroom? Do they bathe regularly and completely? Can they get into the shower or bath safely? Do they wash their body? Do they groom themselves and maintain good overall hygiene? Do they brush their teeth, shave, comb their hair, etc.? Do they put on clean clothes? Do they toss their dirty clothes in the laundry? Can they walk from the bedroom or bathroom to the kitchen without risk of falling?
“If you answered no to any or all of the aforementioned questions, your loved one may benefit from personal care services,” concluded Fearnow.
