At the Case Management Society of America’s (CMSA) 24th Annual Conference & Expo on July 17 – 20, 2014, in Cleveland, OH, the professional association presented its national awards for individuals, organizations, and chapter recipients.
Also featured at the event were special guests including Dr. Michael Anderson, Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for the University Hospitals; Dr. James Merlino Chief Experience Officer for Cleveland Clinic; and Cleveland Mayor Frank G. Jackson. Guests spoke to attendees of innovations in patient engagement and care coordination, as well as topics of motivation and success.
CMSA’s Lifetime Achievement Award recipient is Margaret “Peggy” Leonard, MS, RN-BC, FNP, Senior Vice President for Clinical Services at Hudson Health Plan, a not-for-profit managed health care organization in New York State (NYS). Peggy is often recognized for leadership qualities built through positions such as: past president and current Public Policy Committee Chair Emeritus of the Case Management Society of America; and member of the National Quality Forum Quality Research and Improvement Council, among many other positions.
CMSA’s Case Manager of the Year Award recipient is Mary Beth Newman, MSN, RN-BC, CMAC, CCP, MEP, CCM, of Loveland, Ohio. As the Ohio Care Management Liaison Director for Care Source, Newman was one of the three founders of the Southern Ohio Valley Chapter in 2005 and has provided leadership to help ensure the growth and prosperity of the chapter. Her dedication to her craft has resulted in numerous honors, awards, and special recognitions.
The 2014 Award of Service Excellence recipient is Deborah Gutteridge, MS, CBIST. Gutteridge has devoted her career to assisting those with brain and spinal cord injuries; conducting comprehensive assessments; advocating for rehabilitation services; and educating case managers, payers, other health care professionals and the public to improve outcomes for individuals with brain and spinal cord injuries. Gutteridge currently serves as the clinical evaluator and admissions coordinator for NeuroRestorative.
Case Management Practice Improvement Award & Case Management Research Award
The Case Management Practice Improvement Award and Case Management Research Award recognize an individual, group or organization that uses findings from a research or quality/performance improvement (QI/PI) project for innovation in the advancement of case management practice and/or improved client outcomes. The purpose of this project was to improve stroke education for patients in the Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility (IRF), and consequently improve their transition to home. The team was to demonstrate the significant contribution the interprofessional team makes to patient's recovery and their ability to learn and sustain key principles of disease management.
The aim of this study was to explore if a case manager led educational and experiential intervention supporting interprofessional collaboration in medical homes will positively impact perceptions of team members on interprofessional collaboration.
