The American Culture is a proud culture indeed, not only is it a stalwart protector of freedom and progressive thinking, it is also described as an optimistic and vibrant culture where anything is possible. In these times though the culture seems to have been marred by a multitude of problems such as war, poverty, health care, class warfare and continued racial and negative political division. This compelled author Carol Thomas to compile a collection of poetry that addresses the current state of the country in her new book “Shards of Light and Hope: In a Darkening Time.”

This enlightening book of poetry attempts to articulate the realities and social issues of contemporary culture. To address them truthfully, and to offer authentic and honest common sense to taking care of the planet. It specifically highlights the wounded, and those whose suffering may be ameliorated through the empathic observance of the humanities and Aristotle’s notion of “friendship.” It also calls to the multitude of artists, writers and poets all over the world to become more vocal and more involved in solving the problem, and to be increasingly more engaged in changing political mendacity and duplicity.

“Shards of Light and Hope: In a Darkening Time” brings to light the many issues the American contemporary culture faces and how everyone can help solve these problems.
