Celeste Johnson Teaches Young Readers About Autism in New Children’s Book
Marina Del Ray, CA (PRWEB) December 10, 2013 -- The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one in 88 children have been identified as having an autism spectrum disorder. When author Celeste Johnson’s great-grandson was diagnosed with autism, she saw a need to teach children about autism as her other great-grandchildren learned about the disorder through their brother. Her debut children’s book, “The Beez Brothers: Baby Brother has Autism” (published by Trafford Publishing), is designed to not only entertain children, but also to teach them about autism.
The Beez family is so excited to welcome a new baby brother, Dollar Bill, into their hive, but something is different about the baby. While other babies are cooing and calling “mama,” Dollar Bill is quiet and prefers to show his family what he wants rather than asking for it. The Beez family quickly learns that Dollar Bill has autism.
Children will learn along with the Beez family as they come to understand more and more about autism and how to help Dollar Bill grow into a happy, healthy bee.
“I believe young readers can learn how to recognize and cope with autism and to understand that children with special needs have their own way of dealing with life’s challenges,” Johnson says. “It is important for all children to understand that there is no need to bully anyone because they’re different.”
