This was a time when Civil rights laws were fought for and passed; women began to find a voice and break down barriers. Immigrant workers and Native Americans began to raised their voices. America was becoming a smarter, more aware nation—for a while. The Vietnam War became a symbol of those times. The music helped define them, and the illegal use of banned substances gave some of them the temporary courage to face the insanity head-on.
“The Ranch” tells a story of youth to manhood in very graphic detail. A young mind is bent this way and that until it’s owner decides to take control of his own destiny. Chris Peck’s hero slowly evolves into a war resister who gets into the exact amount of trouble required to be assigned to a horse ranch in the U.S. Navy. There are a substantial amount of rants that he included for mostly therapeutic reasons, well-chosen fits of profanity that help to paint a portrait of military culture as it was and, he believes, still is to this day. This story is also about the hippie culture which attempted, in ways funny, raucous and hip, to redefine the social, musical, philosophical, and religious landscape of America, with varying results. It has a well-defined world of youthful rage and cool, of relating to one’s soul all culminating on a naval horse ranch whose members were all willing enough to go along with the not always well thought out program.
“The Ranch” is Peck’s first attempt as a writer with a story to tell. It is mostly a nonfictional, autobiographical account of a few very important years of his life, populated with people, filled with events and popular epithets that go from good, bad, humorous, and stunningly sad – all shining with the counterculture’s powerful, libertarian charm. He has plans to write a second book, which will document his experience as a telephone man in Northeast New Jersey. It will have plenty of danger, sex, drugs, and rock and roll with just a hint of “The Sopranos.”
