Retired Col. George W. Carrington explores the influence of foreign visitors to China during the Manchu Dynasty in “American Missionaries and Russian Explorers Close in on China” (published by AuthorHouse).

A U.S. Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff in the 1960s, Carrington, 92, has compiled the essays he completed while pursuing his master’s degree at American University. These essays contrast the entering of the otherwise isolated China by Russian explorers and American missionaries.

An excerpt from “American Missionaries and Russian Explorers Close in on China”:

“It is my interest in this paper to investigate briefly into the philosophy behind the missionary movement, to give and outline a review of the missionary movement itself, to describe by means of biographical comment some of the most prominent of the early China missionaries, and to conclude with some of the evaluations or summarizations of the missionary movement.”
