Creator Of Sustainable “Dumpster Home” To Display New Works At The Wooden Duck
Berkeley, CA (PRWEB) July 19, 2013 -- The Wooden Duck is pleased to announce that Berkeley-based artist Gregory Kloehn will be displaying his unique “Dumpster Home” creations during the annual summer sale. Kloehn’s most recent creations will be on display at East Bay furniture store The Wooden Duck in Berkeley, CA starting during the retailer’s annual summer sale July 19-21.
Kloehn creates fully equipped studio apartments built inside of a dumpster and bicycles that clean and dry dishes. New works will include a shopping cart mobile home and a rolling walker with a functioning grill. These may seem like the fantasies of the active urban imagination, and they were, until Kloehn brought them to life.
Working out of his Oakland studio, Kloehn has spent years taking everyday objects and recycling them into sustainable works of art that challenge preconceptions about the uses of one’s surroundings and push the boundaries of their practical limitations. His work includes a variety of sculpture, from a series of modified bicycles with new, innovative capabilities to life-size renderings of large mammals, such as rhinos and bulls, all comprised of reclaimed materials given new life.
The artist’s “Dumpster Home”, which boasts hardwood floors, granite countertops, a stove, bbq, water storage tank, and roof deck for lounging, drew attention and praise from the art and design community leading up to its display at the 2011 SF Fringe Festival. The innovative living unit has been considered a cutting-edge representation of the “small house movement”- a social and architectural movement that advocates smaller, more sustainable homes.
The piece has been featured on The Rachel Ray Show, HGTV and became the subject of a short video documentary that can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvSZL4eppTQ.

About the company:
The Wooden Duck has been making commercial furniture from recycled wood and reclaimed materials in their shop in West Berkeley and around the world for almost 20 years. Their imported, reclaimed wood furniture is generally considered the most direct-to-consumer value on the West Coast as they ship factory direct and are located a mere seven miles from the port of Oakland.
They sell directly to Northern California customers from their shops in Berkeley and San Rafeal and have eliminated the “tiered” designer/wholesaler/trade pricing to which most direct importers still adhere. The Wooden Duck offers a discount system according to how much the customer buys... not who they are. The Wooden Duck does not ship out of state in order to keep costs down for their local clientele. Their weekly “Duck Deal” is considered the lowest price in the country on one particular item two or three times a month and it has a loyal following (sign up on their home page).
They pride themselves on always having used 100 percent solid recycled wood (no ply, no veneer) and their factory in Berkeley specializes in locally made dining tables, beds and custom finishing on exotic reclaimed lumber from the world.
