CriminalRecords.us.org has made a broad change in their terms of service to make it clear to consumers that they cannot pay money to have their arrest records removed from their database, the company said yesterday.
“Each and every day, we get calls from people who want their criminal records removed from our system,” a CriminalRecords.us.org spokesman said. “For that reason, we felt the need to make it clear that it is our policy to never remove a criminal record. That would be unfair to the consumers who trust us to provide them with accurate information.”
CriminalRecords.us.org said many of the people who contact them offer them hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars to have their records deleted from their system.
“These callers have heard that other companies will remove a record if they are paid enough money,” he said. “We don't do that. In fact, we think that doing so would be a form of extortion that would be against the law. It saddens us that other companies in our industry do so.”
People want their records removed so that others don't know that they have a criminal history and can pass a basic background check, he said.
“We built our company to help protect consumers,” he said. “We would not be doing our job if we let our company be paid off to whitewash a criminal record background check.”
