Funeral Director Edwin Cruz of Cruz-Sojka Funeral Home Says the New Year is the Time to Plan
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) February 05, 2016 -- In light of the new year and beginning of 2016, Edwin Cruz, owner of Cruz-Sojka Funeral Home, discusses why any New Year’s resolution should include pre-planning for one's funeral.
“The beginning of each year is fraught with optimism and positive resolutions,” said Cruz. “However, one that is often overlooked is planning for your own funeral, which does not have to be an uncomfortable experience; in fact, it can be quite emotionally rewarding and result in peace of mind.”
Additionally, pre-planning for one's funeral can take some of the anticipated financial stress off of family, while ensuring one still gets the funeral they desire. One of the first things people should decide is whether they want to be buried or cremated. If one chooses to be buried, one will need to purchase a burial plot or a spot in a mausoleum at a cemetery. If one chooses cremation, a decision has to be made about what is done with the cremated remains and where, if anywhere, one may want them scattered. Also, it is important to decide whether or not one wants to be an organ donor.
“Many people are hesitant when it comes to donating their organs, as they feel it is too macabre,” said Cruz. “However, keep in mind that donating your organs can potentially save up to eight lives and enhance many others through tissue donation.”
Next, choose a funeral director. Research local funeral homes and when finding the right one, work with the funeral director to plan the burial or cremation and funeral or memorial service. If planning a funeral followed by burial, one will usually have to work with a funeral director at a funeral home.
“A funeral director can help you with all the arrangements, including purchasing a plot at a cemetery,” said Cruz. “You can also utilize a funeral director to help find a cemetery for not only your burial, but for family and loved ones for their eventual burials.”
A funeral director can also help choose a casket, urn or cremation casket. Decide what type of service, which can include a funeral, graveside service, wake, viewing, etc., as well as who to make as pallbearers and what readings or songs to include at the service.
“Pre-planning for your funeral also enables you to choose the type of flowers you want, who will eulogize you and anything else,” said Cruz. “You can even make a list of guests you want at your service to help celebrate your life and write your own obituary.”
