David A. Kendall’s new book makes case for generational storytelling
ALEXANDRIA BAY, N.Y. (PRWEB) October 08, 2014 -- When author Dr. David A. Kendall was given his great-grandmother’s diary in the ’90s, he felt compelled to write about the value of genealogy in today’s society.
In his new nonfiction book “When Descendants Become Ancestors: The Flip Side of Genealogy” (published by Balboa Press), he discusses the flip-side of the family tree, suggesting to readers that they should look forward to providing for future generations instead of looking back for what they can gain from their ancestors.
“Through transmission of our stories, each of us has the opportunity to be a teacher to future generations, including the yet-to-be-born,” Kendall says. “Life stories, experiences and conclusions are unique to each individual and we cannot know which ones might be helpful to a given descendant or to future generations. Our task is only to provide them.”
Kendall’s new book develops the premise that every person on Earth begins life as a descendant, but concludes life as an ancestor. His goal is to encourage readers to chronicle their lives and customs so that future generations will be informed of the journeys, heartaches, successes and plans of their past generations.
“I want all readers – young, old and middle-aged – to realize their gifts and competence as human beings, and that status, wealth and academic credentials have little to do with wisdom,” Kendall says. “Everyone matters and has important contributions to make to the future of our planet and humanity.”
